Libya: Renewed clashes reported in Janzour (Tripoli) on July 9 /update 1

Renewed clashes between rival groups reported in Janzour area of western Tripoli on July 9; further clashes possible in near term

Warning

Event

Rival armed groups reportedly engaged in clashes in the Janzour area of western Tripoli on the afternoon of Thursday, July 9, two days after a number of civilians were wounded in a similar confrontation. Unconfirmed reports indicate that the violence flared after the brother of one of the local militia leaders was killed in an incident earlier in the day. It is currently unclear whether the latest clashes have resulted in any civilian or militia casualties. Roads in the area have reportedly been blocked to traffic following the incident.

Tensions remain elevated in the area and there remains a realistic possibility of further clashes in the near term.

Context

Tensions between armed groups under the control of Mohammed Fakkar and Mahmoud Abu Jaffar escalated in Janzour on Tuesday, July 7, resulting in serious clashes around a fuel station in the Ratemi junction area in the early hours of the morning. A number of vehicles and buildings were damaged by small arms fire during the incident before the two sides disengaged. However, tensions have remained elevated in the area over contested control of local assets and resources.

Advice

Those in Tripoli are advised to avoid the Janzour area in the near term due to the risk of further armed clashes, monitor developments, and adhere to any directives issued by local authorities.

The security environment in Libya remains complex. Although travel is possible in some areas (with appropriate security protocols in place), other areas should be considered strictly off-limits. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to travel.
