Nepal: Landslides in west of the country kill dozens on July 11 /update 1

As of Saturday, July 11, heavy rainfall causing flash floods and landslides in western Nepal has left at least 23 people dead and thousands displaced. In the Myagdi district (Gandaki province), 200km (125 miles) northwest of Kathmandu, nine people died and more than 30 people remain missing, with several houses destroyed. At least seven individuals have died in the districts of Kaski (Gandaki province) and Jarakot (Karnali province), with eight people missing in the latter. Casualties are expected to rise as rescue teams reach remote areas. The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority has reported that the current monsoon season has been the deadliest in more than a decade.

Further rains are to be expected throughout Nepal during the monsoon season, which lasts until September. Disruption to transportation and businesses are likely in the near term.
