Belgium: Protesters block roads in Brussels July 31

Protesters block roads in Brussels on July 31; avoid all protests as a precaution, anticipate further localized disruptions in the near term

Warning

Event

Disruptions were reported in Brussels on Friday morning, July 31, as employees of the Midi Fair protested for several hours against a ban in place prohibiting the summer fair. According to media sources, employees halted traffic by blocking roads with over 400 trucks loaded with fairground rides and equipment. The annual event, held since the late 19th century, was set to take place this coming weekend, however, due to concerns surrounding a spike in coronavirus disease (COVID-19) cases, authorities have reimposed curbs which have prohibited the fair from going ahead.

Further protests and associated disruptions are possible in the near term.

Advice

Those in Brussels are advised to monitor the situation, anticipate residual disruptions, and adhere to instructions issued by local authorities.
