Iraq: IED attack hits logistical convoy in Taji August 11

Event

A US coalition logistical convoy was targeted in an improvised explosive device (IED) attack on Tuesday, August 11, in the Taji area, around 20km (12 miles) northwest of Baghdad. At least one vehicle was damaged in the bombing near Camp Taji at around 11:00 (local time) but there were no reports of any casualties. The Saraya Thawrat Al-Ishrin Shia militia group subsequently claimed responsibility for the attack on social media.

Similar attacks targeting US coalition facilities and interests are possible in Iraq over the near term.

Context

IED attacks on coalition logistical convoys have been increasing in recent weeks, with responsibility for such bombings frequently being claimed by Shia militia groups. Tuesday's attack was the third to hit logistical convoys in the country in less than 48 hours after an IED attack targeting vehicles near Nasiriyah on Sunday, August 9, and an alleged attack on a convoy near the Jraischan border crossing with Kuwait on Monday night, although the latter incident was denied by Iraqi and Kuwaiti authorities.
