Unidentified gunmen kill member of Federal Ministerial Police in Leon (Guanajuato state) on August 12; heightened security presence anticipated

Armed men shot dead a member of the Federal Ministerial Police and wounded another in the Villas de San Juan neighborhood of Leon (Guanajuato state) on Wednesday, August 12. The shooting took place on Pyxis Street at the corner of Galena Boulevard, a short distance from the National Guard building, at around 14:30 (local time). The officers were carrying out field work in the area when they were attacked. The National Guard fired shots in retaliation, but the perpetrators escaped and as of late Wednesday no arrests had been made following the incident. An investigation has been launched into the incident.

A heightened security presence is to be anticipated in the area in the near term.
