Libya: LNA forces arrest IS group in Murzuq August 13

LNA forces intercept and arrest IS affiliated group in Murzuq on August 13; further operations targeting suspected Islamist militants are possible in the area in the near term

Warning

Event

Local sources indicate that Libyan National Army (LNA) forces intercepted and arrested a group affiliated with the Islamic State (IS) militant group on Thursday, August 13, in Murzuq (Murzuq district).

Additional security operations targeting suspected Islamist militants are possible in the Murzuq area.

Context

IS is known to be present in the Murzuq area, claiming an attack at Taraghin (Murzuq district) at the end of May. IS is believed to have a limited capability and this operation is likely to further impact in their ability to conduct significant operations. Numerous reports continue to claim that foreign fighters with IS affiliation have entered the country, supporting both the Government of National Accord (GNA) and LNA, however, there is nothing to indicate that this has enhanced the groups capability in the south at this time.

Advice

Those in Murzuq are advised to monitor developments to the situation, avoid the area, and adhere to any directives issued by local authorities.

The security environment in Libya remains complex. Although travel is possible in some areas (with appropriate security protocols in place), other areas should be considered strictly off-limits. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to travel.
