Libya: Small arms and heavy weapon fire heard in areas of Tripoli August 15-16
Small arms and heavy weapons fire heard in the Gorji, Hay al-Andalus, El Draiby, and Ghut al Shaal areas of Tripoli on August 15 and 16; avoid the areas
Event
Small arms and heavy weapons fire were heard in areas of Tripoli on the evening of Saturday, August 15, into the early hours of Sunday, August 16, after members of the General Security Service militia reportedly deployed forces in the areas of Gorji, Hay al-Andalaus, El Draiby, and Ghut al Shaal. The deployment was viewed as a show of force by the group following reports that control of the area is to be handed over to Rada Deterrence forces (Rada) militia, and it was not immediately clear if clashes took place amid the firing. Both militias are notionally aligned with the Tripoli-based Government of National Accord (GNA), yet operate with their own agendas.
It is probable that the area will see heightened security presence over the coming days as the General Security Service seek to remain in control of the area. Clashes with Rada are considered likely if the group attempts to assume control of the area.
Advice
Those in Tripoli are advised to avoid the affected areas in the near term due to the risk of armed clashes, monitor developments, and adhere to any directives issued by local authorities.
The security environment in Libya remains complex. Although travel is possible in some areas (with appropriate security protocols in place), other areas should be considered strictly off-limits. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to travel.
