Anti-government protesters killed in clash with government supporters in Kassala town on August 27; further clashes possible

On Thursday, August 27, supporters of the newly appointed Kassala State governor, Saleh Ammar, allegedly opened fire on protesters demanding his departure in Kassala town. At least four protesters were killed, and a further six injured. Looting by both sides was reported in the town following the incident. A heavy security presence was deployed in the Al Gash area of the state, and movement has reportedly been restricted.
A continued security presence is to be expected in Kassala in the near term. Disruption to transportation and business is also likely in the near term.
Context
Sudan is currently in a three-year transition period under a joint civilian-military administration after the long-serving president Omar al-Bashir was ousted amid widespread anti-government protests in April 2019. However, pro-democracy groups under the Forces of Freedom and Change (FFC) coalition and the Sudanese Professionals Association (SPA) have continued to press for the expedited transfer to full civilian rule ahead of elections in 2022.
