Sudan: Authorities declare flooding state of emergency on September 5 /update 1

Sudanese authorities declared a three-month state of emergency and designated the country a disaster zone on Saturday, September 5, following continued heavy rainfall and nationwide flooding. At least 99 people have been killed this year, and a further 46 have been injured. The flooding has caused more than 100,000 homes to be damaged or destroyed, with half a million people having been displaced. The worst affected regions are East Sudan, White Nile, Darfur, Khartoum.

Further rains throughout the rainy season, which runs through to October, are likely to cause further flooding and associated disruptions nationwide over the medium term.
