Cambodia: Tropical Storm Noul leaves at least 11 dead September 21

Event

The Cambodian National Committee for Disaster Management reported on Monday, September 21, that Tropical Storm Noul has left at least 11 people dead and one missing across the country. The storm's effects were witnessed over large areas of the country during Noul's passing. At least eight people were killed in the province of Battambang from lightning strikes attributed to the storm, with at least three people known to have drowned in the coastal provinces of Preah Sihanouk and Koh Kong, and one missing in Pailin. Flash flooding in low-lying provinces has damaged thousands of homes, forcing hundreds of people to seek emergency shelter on higher ground. Noul also impacted areas of the Philippines, Vietnam, Laos, and Thailand during its passing.   

Additional flooding and landslides are possible in affected areas in the near term, as well as disruptions to business and transport.

Advice

Those in areas affected by the storm system are advised to monitor local weather reports, confirm flight reservations, adhere to instructions issued by local authorities, anticipate adverse weather and power and transportation disruptions, and avoid driving or walking through flooded streets. Floodwater may also contain wastewater and chemical products.
