Vietnam: Flash flooding kills five in northern and central provinces October 8

Flash flooding has killed five people in northern and central provinces of Vietnam as of Thursday, October 8, due to torrential rains reaching up to 400mm (16in) which have been occurring since Wednesday, October 7. At least six others remain missing in the affected provinces of Gia Lai, Quảng Trị, and Lào Cai. The worst affected areas include the Đông Hà City, Gio Linh, Hải Lăng, Thạch Phong, and Vĩnh Linh districts in Quảng Trị province. Communities along the Thạch Hãn River were evacuated and a number of communities were left isolated in Quảng Trị. In Thừa Thiên-Huế province, a landslide occurred in A Lưới district, causing localized disruption.

Heavy rain is forecast to affect the region until Saturday, October 10, which could lead to more flooding and associated disruptions to business and transport.
