Vietnam: Tropical storm forecast to make landfall in central Vietnam October 11

Event

Tropical Storm 17W is tracking westwards in the South China Sea towards Vietnam and is expected to make landfall south of Da Nang late on Sunday, October 11. 17W is forecast to strengthen before making landfall and will be carrying maximum sustained winds of around 80 kph (50 mph) by the time it reaches Vietnam. The storm system will start to dissipate after it makes landfall but will continue to track westwards towards Laos and Cambodia.

Heavy rainfall and strong winds are forecast in central and south-central provinces in the coming days. Associated disruptions to transport, utilities, and businesses are possible during the passing of the storm system.

Context

Powerful storm systems are common in Vietnam during the typhoon season from June to November, and often particularly affect the North and Central regions. However, a number have also made landfall in the south in recent years due to changes to storm patterns in the South China Sea.

Those in areas forecast to be affected by the storm system are advised to monitor local weather reports, confirm flight reservations, adhere to instructions issued by local authorities, anticipate adverse weather and power and transportation disruptions, and avoid driving or walking through flooded streets. Floodwater may also contain wastewater and chemical products.
