Mexico: Anti-government activists to hold nationwide protests, December 5-6; heightened security and transport disruptions are likely

Anti-government activists to protest in several cities across Mexico, Dec. 5-6. Heightened security and traffic disruptions are likely.

Warning

Event

Activists affiliated with various organizations opposed to President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador (AMLO), including the National Anti-AMLO Front (Frente Nacional Anti-AMLO, FRENAAA), plan to hold nationwide marches and vehicular protests between Dec. 5-6. Dubbed the "Vaccine against the Morenavirus," in reference to the president's National Regeneration Movement (Movimiento Regeneracion Nacional, MORENA), the purpose of the demonstrations is to demand the president's resignation. It is possible that additional or unannounced rallies and demonstrations may occur in plazas, city squares, or parks in major cities. Protests have been confirmed in the following cities:

  • Merida, Yucatan: March from El Remate, to the Monumento a la Patria 1000 Dec. 6

  • Guadalajara, Jalisco: Glorieta Arcos de Loma Dorada, 1000 Dec. 6

  • Xalapa, Veracruz: Plaza Lerdo, 1100 Dec. 5

Some of the largest demonstrations will probably take place in Mexico City, Ciudad Juarez, Monterrey, and Puebla. Participation will vary significantly by location, with gatherings in major cities potentially attracting thousands of people.

Increased security and transport disruptions are likely. Police will almost certainly deploy to monitor the protests. Demonstrations, protests, and other public events have largely been suspended in the country due to coronavirus disease (COVID-19)-related restrictions. While most demonstrations will remain largely peaceful, isolated skirmishes cannot be ruled out.

Advice

Avoid all protests as a standard security precaution. If violence breaks out, leave the area immediately, and seek shelter in the nearest secure location. Monitor local sources to check the status of roads, as protesters may stage new blockades without warning. Heed the instructions of all security personnel.
