Guatemala: Protesters to march in Guatemala City Dec. 10 to commemorate International Human Rights Day

Activists plan to gather in downtown Guatemala City, Guatemala, from 0800 Dec. 10 to commemorate International Human Rights Day.

The US Embassy in Guatemala has issued a demonstration alert warning of a protest in Guatemala City from 0800 Dec. 10. Comite de Unidad Campesina (CUC) plans to protest in the city to commemorate International Human Rights Day. Demonstrators will gather at the Ministerio Publico before marching into the downtown area, bypassing several landmarks, including the Human Rights Office, and Congress, before ending at the Casa Presidencial at approximately 1400. Hundreds of people are likely to attend.

Security forces will likely deploy to monitor and manage the demonstrators. Clashes are possible if demonstrators ignore police orders or engage in acts of public violence. Ground travel disruptions are likely near all protest points Dec. 10.
