Guinea-Bissau: Public service strike ongoing in Guinea-Bissau Jan. 7

Civil service union strike underway across Guinea-Bissau through Jan. 8. Protests and transport disruptions possible.

Warning

Event

Members of the largest civil service workers' union in Guinea-Bissau have embarked on a strike through Jan. 8. The National Union of Guinean Workers (UNTG) called the strike to protest the government's perceived inappropriate hiring practices and other demands. Medical facilities and schools have been affected as affiliated unions join the work stoppage. This is the latest in a series of UNTG strikes, with several incidents recorded in 2020.

Strikes occur regularly in Guinea-Bissau, and further stoppages cannot be discounted in the coming weeks. Protests are possible in Bissau and other urban centers. Incidents could lead to transport disruptions and security disturbances around protest sites. Clashes are also possible.

Advice

Avoid all possible gatherings due to the potential for violence. Exercise caution if in the vicinity of government facilities. Leave the area immediately and seek shelter in a secure location if clashes erupt. Confirm medical appointments at state-run medical facilities for the duration of the strike. Be prepared for some delays. Use alternative routes to avoid any publicized demonstrations.
