Spain: Public sector workers plan to strike Jan. 11 and 15 in the Canary Islands

Unions in the Canary Islands, Spain, plan to strike Jan. 11 and 15; further strikes likely through at least March. Protests possible.

Warning

Event

Public sector workers' unions, including Sepca, Pefralca, Co.bas, and Intersindical Canaria, have called for indefinite strike action in the Canary Islands from Jan. 11. The strike is in response to demands that temporary workers be provided with fixed employment. Unions plan to strike twice a week, starting Jan. 11 and continuing Jan. 15, through at least March. It is not clear if the same Monday and Friday strike frequency will continue past Jan. 15. Striking workers plan to organize caravan protests during the strike action. Unconfirmed reports suggest that gatherings are planned outside of the offices of the president in Santa Cruz de Tenerife and Las Palmas de Gran Canaria Jan. 11.

Disruptions to public sector operations are likely during strike days. Striking workers are likely to gather near government buildings, particularly in Santa Cruz de Tenerife and Las Palmas de Gran Canaria on strike days. Security forces will likely deploy to monitor gatherings. Clashes are unlikely. Localized ground travel disruptions are possible near protest sites.

Advice

Reconfirm all appointments within the public sector on strike days. Liaise with trusted contacts for further updates on the impact of the labor action and forthcoming strike action. Avoid protests as a standard precaution and to mitigate potential disruptions.
