Spain: Demonstrations scheduled in central Madrid Jan. 23
Activists plan multiple protests in central Madrid Jan. 23; localized disruptions likely.
Event
Activists are planning several demonstrations in central Madrid Jan. 23 over a range of issues. The most notable gathering will likely be a march at 1200 from Plaza de Cibeles to Puerta del Sol to denounce reform of the state pension system; the protest is likely to disperse by 1400.
In addition, hundreds of activists are planning to gather at Plaza del Emperador Carlos V at 1730 to protest the infringement of civil liberties arising from government coronavirus disease (COVID-19)-related restrictions. They will march to Plaza de Colon, where they will rally until 2130.
Although the protests are likely to pass peacefully, police are likely to deploy to monitor the events; localized security measures could prompt road travel disruptions along the march routes. Police could attempt to disperse any events deemed to be in breach of ongoing COVID-19 social distancing restrictions and minor scuffles are possible.
Advice
Avoid the protest as a standard precaution and to mitigate the potential for disruptions. Anticipate potential disruptions and allow additional time for road travel in the vicinity. Leave the area at the first sign of a confrontation.
