Sudan: Protesters close the Gallabat border crossing with Ethiopia Jan. 31
Protests in Basunda, eastern Sudan Jan. 31. Demonstrators have closed the Gallabat crossing point with Ethiopia.
Event
Protests have been reported near a border crossing between Sudan and Ethiopia in Sudan's eastern Al Qadarif State Jan. 31. The demonstration is reportedly occurring in the Basunda area. Protesters have also reportedly forced the closure of the nearby Gallabat crossing point to Ethiopia. The gathering is in opposition to the Jan. 30 kidnapping of three Sudanese merchants by an Ethiopia-based armed group. The group has demanded a ransom for the release of the victims. The Sudanese authorities have deployed additional security personnel to the impact site in response to the incidents.
Heightened security is likely in the area until the kidnap victims are released and the protests conclude. Clashes between protesters and the Sudanese security forces are unlikely. Should the border closure prompt protests by traders on the Ethiopian side of the border or if protests persist in Sudan for several days, confrontations become increasingly likely. Ground travel disruptions are likely to persist for the duration of the protests.
Advice
Liaise with trusted contacts before utilizing the border crossing or traveling to the impact area. Avoid all large gatherings. Heed the instructions of the security forces.
