Various groups to protest at the National Congress in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, Feb. 1. Tight security, disruptions likely.

Warning

Event

Various commercial and transportation organizations, including the Association of Border Companies (ADEFRO), plan to protest outside the National Congress in Santo Domingo Feb. 1. The action is to demand the approval of amendments to the recently passed Border Development Incentive Law. It is unclear when the demonstration will begin. Organizers expect dozens of buses of protesters to arrive in the capital from various border provinces; large gatherings are likely.

Authorities will almost certainly tighten security around the National Congress during the protest. Low-level clashes between police and demonstrators are possible if the latter breach security cordons around the government building or block traffic. Localized traffic disruptions are highly likely.

Advice

Avoid all protests as a standard precaution. If violence breaks out, leave the area immediately and seek shelter in the nearest secure location. Allow extra time to reach destinations near the National Congress Feb. 1.
