Costa Rica: Activists to hold nationwide protests Feb. 15

Activists call for nationwide protests in Costa Rica Feb. 15 against the government's IMF deal. Increased security, disruptions likely.

Warning

Event

Leaders of the National Rescue Movement (Movimiento de Rescate Nacional, MRN) have called for nationwide protests Feb. 15 against the government's loan agreement with the IMF. Organizers have not announced any specific protest locations; possible gathering points are central parks and government buildings, such as the Legislative Assembly. In San Jose, MRN protesters have also previously held rallies in the La Sabana area.

The MRN led a highly disruptive protest campaign in October 2020 against the government's attempts to secure an IMF loan. The campaign involved blockades on major highways throughout the country. Organizers have, however, stated this initial round of protests will not include the use of blockades as a strategy, though some demonstrators may block roads nonetheless.

Police will probably deploy to monitor any large protests. Major violence is unlikely; however, the possibility of low-level confrontations between police and protesters cannot be ruled out, especially if police attempt to clear those who block roads. Localized traffic disruptions are likely near large gatherings.

Advice

Avoid all protests. Do not attempt to cross any roadblocks. If violence breaks out, leave the area immediately and seek shelter in the nearest secure location. Plan for potential localized disruptions near possible protest sites Feb. 15.
