Additional violent clashes are likely across Tripoli following an assassination attempt on the Minister of Interior early Feb. 21. The government official had concluded a meeting with the national oil corporation and was returning to Tripoli. Unidentified assailants attacked the government officials’ convoy as it was traveling through Janzour. The official escaped unharmed. One of the assailants was killed in the attack and at least two other individuals were arrested.
The security incident prompted infighting and violent clashes between rival militia groups in the Ghut Shaal area. The groups are currently engaged in heavy gunfire. The situation in the west of Tripoli is currently tense and further security incidents are possible. Localized traffic and transit disruptions are likely in the area. Officials have already closed several streets, including the Third and Second Ring Roads. An increased security presence is likely until the situation is brought under control.
