Guatemala: Veterans to protest in Guatemala City Feb. 23
Army veterans to march from several points in Guatemala City, Guatemala, from 0600 Feb. 23. Increased security, disruptions likely.
Event
Veterans of Guatemala's armed forces plan to march from multiple locations in Guatemala City to Plaza de la Constitucion and then Congress, starting at 0600 Feb. 23. The action is to demand compensation for the previous service of retired military personnel. The starting points for the marches include Puente Belice, Calzada Roosevelt, Calzada San Juan, Puente el Incienso, Hipodromo del Norte, Columpio de Vista Hermosa, the Obelisk, and an unspecified point on Carretera a El Salvador (officially known as the CA1 Panamerican Highway). Hundreds of veterans and their supporters could attend the demonstration.
Police will almost certainly deploy to monitor the protests and secure the Congress building. Clashes between police and protesters are possible if demonstrators block roads or breach security cordons around Congress. The marches are likely to cause localized traffic disruptions in several parts of Guatemala City.
Advice
Avoid all protests and leave the area at the first sign of violence. Heed the directives of the authorities. Allow extra time to reach destinations across Guatemala City from the morning of Feb. 23.
