Libya: Clashes erupt between security forces and militia group in Tripoli late April 16
Increased security likely in central Tripoli, Libya, following clashes between security forces and militia group late April 16.
Event
Increased security is likely in central Tripoli over the coming days following clashes that erupted between the Judicial Police and forces led by prominent militia leader Abdul Ghani al-Kikli (also known as Ghneiwa) near the Al-Madar Roundabout in Ras Hassan late April 16. The violence broke out in reaction to the arrest of one of al-Kikli's bodyguards and the subsequent retaliatory capture of seven Judicial Police officers. Special Deterrence Forces (SDF) intervened, mobilizing forces and triggering negotiations, which led to the release of the officers as they sought to de-escalate the situation.
While the clashes have reportedly stopped, tensions remain high, and new confrontations are possible with the SDF mobilizing forces in support of the Judicial Police. The city's Abu Saleem and Salahuddin areas, as well as locations in central Tripoli, remain particularly susceptible to clashes in the coming days.
Advice
Exercise heightened vigilance in the impacted area in the coming days. Liaise with trusted contacts for updates on the security situation before travel into or near the area. Heed the directives of authorities. Avoid travel at night and carry identification to facilitate movement through checkpoints.
