Chile: Dockworkers launch nationwide strike April 26

Dockworkers in Chile launch nationwide strike April 26. Protests, clashes likely.

Warning

Event

Dockworkers represented by the Port Workers' Union of Chile launched a nationwide strike April 26. The industrial action began at about 15:30; according to labor leaders, the walkout will last for at least five consecutive shifts, suggesting it likely will not end before early April 28. The purpose of the strike is to show support for legislation allowing early withdrawals from retirement funds, which passed in Congress but is being challenged in court by President Sebastian Pinera's administration. Preliminary reporting indicates that the strike is currently impacting 25 port terminals, with over 8,000 stevedores participating.

Striking workers could stage protests and pickets outside of port facilities as part of their action. Dockworkers at the Port of San Antonio in the Valparaiso Region set fire to makeshift barricades and engaged in running clashes with police on April 26. Further such incidents are possible over the course of the work stoppage. Localized ground transport disruptions are possible in the vicinity of port facilities. Maritime transport disruptions and processing delays could extend for several days after the strike ends as port authorities work to clear any container backlog.

Advice

Allow additional time when routing freight through Chilean ports during the strike action; consider alternative shipping methods for critical cargoes. Avoid all demonstrations as a routine precaution and to mitigate possible disruption.
