Niger: Additional protests possible in Niamey following May 7 student demonstration
Further sporadic protests likely following May 7 student demonstrations in Niamey, Niger. Low-level clashes possible.
Event
Additional sporadic protests are possible in Niamey over the coming days, and through the weekend of May 9 in particular, following a student demonstration that took place in the Nigerien capital May 7. Student activists blocked the Kennedy Bridge to condemn the nonpayment of university scholarships and demand better living conditions, among other things. Organizers have not announced specific locations or timings for new demonstrations; however, student groups have threatened to intensify their efforts should the government refuse to meet their demands.
Localized transportation disruptions and heightened security are likely during any further protests that may materialize. Additional gatherings could occur near government agencies, in prominent squares, or at various schools around Niamey in the days ahead. New clashes between demonstrators and security forces cannot be ruled out.
Advice
Avoid all protests as a standard precaution. Heed the advice of security officials. Allow additional time to reach destinations near demonstration locations. Monitor local sources for additional information on protests as organizers may not announce plans in advance.
