Sudan: Heightened security likely following May 24 tribal violence in Red Sea State; state of emergency, night curfew in effect in some areas
Tribal clashes in Port Sudan, Sudan, prompt officials to issue state of emergency, night curfew May 24; increased security presence likely.
Event
Increased security measures and consequent transport disruptions are likely in Port Sudan through at least late May amid heightened intercommunal tensions. Authorities imposed a state of emergency and nightly curfew in parts of Red Sea State, including from 17:00-05:00 in Port Sudan's Deem al-Nur, Qadisiyah, and Umm al-Qura neighborhoods, May 24. The move comes after tribal clashes earlier in the day left at least five people dead and 13 others wounded in Port Sudan. Officials did not immediately announce when the curfew will be lifted.
Further tribal clashes and related demonstrations are possible over the coming days.
Advice
Consider deferring nonessential travel to Port Sudan until the situation has stabilized. Heed the directives of security forces, avoid large crowds, and abide by curfew measures. Confirm the status of freight shipments in the city through at least May 31.
