Unidentified militants attacked Diffa, May 28. During clashes with the local security forces, at least eight people, including four security personnel and four civilians, were killed. At least 13 people were injured, and at least six of the attackers were killed. As of May 29, military operations have been initiated in the impacted area. A local official has attributed the assault to Boko Haram. There have been no claims of responsibility.

Heightened security measures and military operations are likely in and around Diffa in the coming days. Officials could implement movement restrictive measures, including checkpoints and curfews. The attacking group remains at large, and further attacks are possible.

Context

The attack underscores the severe insecurity and risk of militant attacks across southern Niger and around the Lake Chad region. Incidents are regularly reported. Unidentified assailants attacked a security post along the RN1 road between Maine-Soroa and Diffa, Diffa Region, May 22, killing at least one person.
