Serbia: Authorities declare state of emergency in some southern areas July 21 following severe flooding

Disruption ongoing in southern Serbia July 21 following flooding; overland transport disruptions likely.

Warning

Event

Authorities have declared a state of emergency in parts of southeastern Serbia as of July 21 as emergency services respond to widespread flooding following heavy rains. The measure applies to Zuprija and parts of Gadzin-Khan municipalities. Widespread infrastructural damage has been reported in several southern municipalities, including Blace, Gadzin-Khan, Ivanjica, Krusevac, and Zuprija. Overland transport disruptions are ongoing in affected areas, particularly near the villages of Kasevar and Trbunie. Landslides have reportedly blocked roads in the vicinity of Golija.

Disruptions could persist for several days until the waters recede and structural repairs can be made. Floodwaters and debris flows could render bridges or roadways impassable, impacting overland travel in and around affected areas. Ponding on road surfaces could cause hazardous driving conditions on regional highways. Authorities could temporarily close some low-lying routes that become inundated by floodwaters. Flooding could block regional rail lines; freight and passenger train delays and cancellations are possible in areas that see heavy rainfall and potential track inundation. Localized business disruptions are likely in low-lying areas; some businesses might not operate at full capacity because of flood damage to facilities, possible evacuations, and some employees' inability to reach work sites.

Advice

Check route and public transport status before travel. Confirm all transport reservations and business appointments. Allow extra time for travel in the affected area and plan alternative routes if necessary. Do not drive on flooded roads.
