Event
Unidentified assailants attacked Wiye village in Bani Bangou Rural Commune, Ouallam Department, Tillaberi Region, at around 15:00 July 25, killing 14 people. Authorities stated that the attack was conducted by armed individuals riding motorcycles. There have been no claims of responsibility for the attack.
Heightened security and associated transport disruptions such as roadblocks and checkpoints are likely in the impacted area in the near term. Further armed attacks remain likely.
Bani Bangou Rural Commune is approximately 180 km (112 miles) northeast of Niamey and 50 km (31 miles) south of the border with Mali.
Context
This is the latest incident in a series of attacks in western Niger in 2021. The attacks have left hundreds of people dead. Islamist militants operating in the tri-border area (Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso) are usually suspected of perpetrating the violence, but armed bandits also contribute to the deteriorating security environment.
