Increased security operations are ongoing in Tillaberi Region Aug. 1 after militants ambushed patrolling soldiers near Torodi the previous day. Authorities confirmed militants killed at least 15 soldiers and wounded seven others in the attack. Reports also indicate at least six missing soldiers.

Heightened security and associated transport disruptions, such as roadblocks and checkpoints, are likely in the impacted area in the near term. Further armed attacks remain likely.

Torodi is around 55 km (34 miles) southwest of Niamey.

Context

Armed bandits and militants usually operate across southern Niger, notably around the Lake Chad region and the so-called tri-border area (Burkina Faso, Niger, Mali). Similar attacks have occurred in the past, including in recent days. Authorities have attributed the incidents to armed bandits, smugglers, or militant Islamist groups affiliated with Al-Qaeda or Islamic State.
