Niger: Officials confirm Boko Haram attack on military post in Diffa Region Aug. 25; at least 16 soldiers killed

Military officials confirmed Aug. 25 that Boko Haram militants killed 16 soldiers and wounded nine others during an attack in Baroua, Diffa Region, the previous day. Hundreds of militants reportedly participated in the assault, and soldiers killed around 50 fighters and seized weapons during the attack. Authorities deployed additional forces to the area following the incident.

Heightened security and additional military operations are likely in and around Baroua in the coming days. Officials could erect security checkpoints and implement movement restrictions and curfews. Further attacks are possible.

Baroua is around 450 km (280 miles) east-southeast of Zinder, Zinder Region.

Context

This incident follows the return of thousands of residents in late June after massacres displaced them in 2015. The assault underscores the severe insecurity and risk of militant attacks across southern Niger and regions around Lake Chad.
