Costa Rica: Bus and taxi drivers to protest in San Jose Sept. 1

Transport workers plan to protest outside presidential palace in San Jose, Costa Rica, Sept. 1. Heightened security, disruptions likely.

Warning

Event

Bus and taxi drivers affiliated with several organizations plan to hold a protest outside the Presidential Residence (Casa Presidencial) in the Zapote neighborhood of San Jose Sept. 1. While organizers have not confirmed a time for the protest, it is likely the demonstration will start in the morning hours. Activists demand several reforms from the national government, including stricter regulations on app-based ride-sharing services.

Transport workers have said they hope for further negotiations with the national government, but claim that if their demands are not met they could escalate their activities by holding a nationwide transport strike.

Heightened security and associated transport and business disruptions are likely Sept. 1 near the Presidential Residence. Clashes between police and demonstrators are unlikely, but cannot be ruled out entirely.

Advice

Avoid the protest as a precaution. Allow additional time to reach destinations in and around San Jose's Zapote neighborhood Sept. 1.
