Uganda: Ongoing security operations in Karamoja, Sept. 13
Heightened security is likely through the end of September due to ongoing security operations in Karamoja, Uganda.
Event
The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) remain deployed in the Karamoja sub-region as of Sept. 13. The security forces have been deployed to counter the threat from and apprehend cattle rustlers. Authorities have warned residents to avoid movement at night; UPDF elements recently killed three civilians, mistaking them for cattle rustlers.
Officials could impose road closures or declare provisional restricted zones in areas where security forces are operating, potentially prompting localized transport disruptions. Sporadic, low-level armed clashes between security forces and cattle rustlers are possible; however, most incidents will probably occur in rural or remote areas.
Advice
If traveling to the region, seek updates about road conditions with trusted local sources before departure. Carry documentation at all times and heed orders by local authorities. Do not travel at night.
