Sudan: Gun battle between security forces and militants kills at least five people in Khartoum Oct. 4
Armed clash between security officers and militants leaves at least five people dead in Khartoum, Sudan, Oct. 4. Avoid the area.
Event
Sudanese security forces clashed with armed militants in Khartoum's Jabra area Oct. 4. Preliminary reports indicate the fighting erupted when the security forces raided a residential building where alleged terrorists were present. At least five security officers were killed, and one other person was injured in the gun battle. Sudanese authorities have accused groups associated with the Islamic State (IS) for the violence.
Officials will likely maintain heightened security measures, including possible roadblocks and other movement restrictions, in the Jabra area, Khartoum, until it becomes clear that the potential for further violence has abated. Localized transport and business disruptions are likely in the surrounding area as investigations continue. Additional clashes remain possible over the coming days.
Context
A group called the “Movement for Preaching and Combat (MPC)” issued a statement claiming responsibility for killing at least six security officers in Khartoum, Sept. 28; the militants denied their connection with IS. The MPC also claimed responsibility for the failed assassination attempt on Sudanese Prime Minister Abdullah Hamdok in March 2020 and has threatened to carry out further attacks against Sudanese authorities. The operational capability and size of the groups is unclear.
Advice
Heed the instructions of local security personnel in Jabra and surrounding areas, Oct. 4. Carry proper identification documents to present at security checks and heed all instructions from security personnel; remain cooperative if stopped for inspections.
