Belgium: Airport police to stage work-to-rule action at Brussels Zaventem and Charleroi airports Oct. 29

Work-to-rule strike planned at Brussels Zaventem and Charleroi airports, Belgium, Oct. 29. Delays in clearing security, customs possible.

Informational

Event

Airport police represented by several labor unions plan to stage a work-to-rule strike at Brussels Zaventem (BRU) and Brussels South Charleroi (CRL) airports Oct. 29. The purpose of the action is to protest the failure of salary negotiations and to draw attention to alleged understaffing.

Although officers will not be walking off the job during the action, they will be performing their work more slowly and exercising greater scrutiny of passengers, luggage, and traveler documentation, potentially causing delays in clearing security and customs checks.

Context

The action comes at a time when increased numbers of travelers are expected to be transiting the two airports due to the autumn vacation season.

Advice

Allow extra time to clear security and passport checks if traveling through BRU or CRL Oct. 29. Contact air carriers to confirm flight schedules. Arrive at the airport well in advance of flights - at least 2.5 hours for flights within the Schengen Zone and 3.5 hours for those to non-Schengen destinations.
