Uganda: Casualties reported following two bomb explosions in Kampala Nov. 16 /update 1

Casualties reported following two bomb explosions on Parliamentary Avenue, Buganda Avenue in Kampala, Uganda Nov. 16.

Critical

Event

Reports indicate that two earlier bomb explosions in Kampala Nov. 16 have left at least two police officers dead and 24 more people injured. Initial reports indicate that two near-simultaneous explosions occurred around 10:00. One blast occurred near the parliament along Parliamentary Avenue, while a second explosion occurred near the Central Police Station on Buganda Road. There have been no claims of responsibility for the attack.

Unconfirmed reports also indicate authorities have discovered another unexploded device near the Kooki Tower building, though this cannot be independently verified.

Security services have cordoned off the surrounding affected areas and closed several nearby roads. Bomb-disposal technicians and sniffer dogs are currently at the scene. Security measures and movement restrictions such as road closures will likely cause transport disruptions notably near blast sites.

Authorities will maintain a considerably heightened security presence across Kampala through at least Nov. 16. Localized disruptions are likely.

Advice

Avoid the blast sites. Heed instructions from the local authorities. Plan for localized ground travel disruptions.
