Enhanced security likely in eastern and northern Sri Lanka for Heroes' Day Nov. 27. Disruptions, clashes possible.
Event
Authorities will likely tighten security in Tamil-dominated areas in Eastern and Northern provinces in for Heroes' Day Nov. 27. Heroes' Day commemorates Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) fighters who died fighting for a separate Tamil state. Pro-Tamil civil and political organizations may hold gatherings in cities and towns. Officials are banning all commemorative events, though some groups may still hold events. Remembrance events usually occur at night and pro-Tamil groups may hold protests denouncing the ban during the day. Larger gatherings may involve hundreds of people.
Officials will likely enhance security in Tamil areas; tight security is especially likely near memorials for LTTE members. Security forces may try to disperse especially disruptive gatherings, possibly resulting in clashes. Gatherings and police activity may prompt localized transport disruptions.
Advice
Avoid gatherings due to possible violence. If clashes break out, leave the area immediately. Follow all security personnel instructions. Allow additional travel time near gatherings.
