Security personnel deployed to Esfahan, Iran Nov. 27 after protests over water management concerns turned violent in recent days.

Warning

Event

Additional security personnel have deployed to Esfahan, in the namesake province, Nov. 27 after protests over water management concerns turned violent Nov. 26. Police used teargas to disperse protesters who had gathered in the dry Zayandeh Rood riverbed, which runs through the city. After this, protests reportedly took on a more anti-government tone as police clashed with protesters in other parts of the city, with unconfirmed reports of protester casualties.

Heightened security is likely at any further demonstrations. Ground travel delays are likely near all protest sites. Further clashes between protesters and security forces are possible if demonstrators ignore police orders to disperse.

Context

Due to the protracted nature of the water shortages, further protests over this issue are likely. Small-scale protests began in Esfahan Nov. 9, but escalated Nov. 19, when thousands of protesters gathered in the city. Hundreds of people also gathered in Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari Province, including in Shahrekord, Nov. 21.

Advice

Avoid all demonstrations. Heed the instructions of security personnel. Plan for ground travel delays near protest sites.
