Power outages reported in some parts of Sri Lanka the afternoon of Dec. 3. Transport disruptions possible.
Event
Power outages are reportedly occurring in several parts of Sri Lanka the afternoon of Dec. 3. The cause of the issues, which reportedly began at around 11:30, is unclear; similar islandwide power cuts occurred Nov. 29 due to technical issues. Authorities have yet to provide a timeframe for power supply recovery.
Disruptions to business and communications, including cellular and mobile services, may occur. Ground traffic disruptions are possible in areas experiencing power disruptions due to malfunctioning traffic signals. Trains may experience delays if outages impact signaling equipment or overhead wires. Power outages could result in the temporary unavailability of essential services such as ATMs and filling stations. Blackouts could adversely affect security protocols, including alarm systems and electronic fences; opportunistic criminal activity could increase during electricity outages. Locals may stage protests in the event of prolonged outages.
Advice
Charge all communication and portable electronic devices when possible. Unplug electronic equipment that is not connected to surge protectors. Exercise caution when driving in areas affected by power outages. Confirm business appointments. Verify that security systems are working, including after power resumes. Ensure that generators are functional and fully fueled. Avoid any protests as a precaution.
