Increased security is likely across the Tillaberi Region over the coming days following a major attack against the G5 Joint Sahel Force (JSF) base at Fianto Dec. 5. According to authorities, several hundred unidentified gunmen on motorcycles attacked the facility early in the day; at least 29 JSF soldiers and 79 of the assailants were killed in the action. No group has as yet claimed responsibility for the incident; however, militants affiliated with Al-Qaeda or the Islamic State are likely behind the assault.
Context
The Dec. 5 attack underscores the pervasive insecurity affecting much of Niger. Armed bandits and militants regularly operate across the southern part of the country, particularly around Lake Chad and in the tri-border region where the borders of Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso meet. Militants have killed numerous civilians and security forces personnel in attacks in Tillaberi Region over recent months. Similar militant attacks remain likely in the tri-border region over the medium term.
