Niger: Civil society groups to protest in Niamey and Dosso Dec. 12

Civil society groups plan to demonstrate in Niamey and Niger, Dec. 12, to protest the presence of foreign militaries in Niger. Organizers have as yet released no details concerning start times or rally locations. It is also unclear whether authorities have granted permits for the events. A similar protest in early December was not sanctioned and was forcefully dispersed by security forces.

Related protests are possible in other parts of the country. Security forces will almost certainly deploy to monitor any gatherings that may materialize. Localized transport disruptions are likely near any demonstration sites. Clashes between authorities and protesters are possible.

Context

Protests denouncing insecurity in the country and the continued involvement of French military forces in the region have escalated in recent weeks. In neighboring Burkina Faso, protesters prevented a French military convoy bound for Niger from passing through the area; confrontations between French forces and protesters left three people injured on Nov. 21.

Niger has experienced deadly militant attacks in recent months and mounting public anger over the apparent inability of the government and its allies to address the issue. Further demonstrations are likely over the near term. Protesters may also increasingly focus on French military forces.
