Sri Lanka: Railway station managers to intensify strike from 00:01 Dec. 27

Railway station managers to intensify nationwide strike in Sri Lanka from Dec. 27; protests possible. Train services largely normal.

Informational

Event

Unionized railway station managers under the Sri Lanka Station Masters Union (SLSMU) have announced plans to intensify an ongoing nationwide work stoppage from 00:01 Dec. 27. The workers have been on strike since Dec. 23 over various demands, such as increased wages and improved signaling infrastructure. Although train services remain largely unaffected, disruptions in ticket fees and parcels collections at stations are likely to continue until the action ends.

Striking workers may hold protests, mainly outside railway stations. The largest gatherings will probably occur in Colombo and may involve dozens of people. Increased security and localized transport disruptions are likely near well-attended demonstrations. Police may use force to disperse unruly crowds.

Advice

Confirm travel reservations and delivery schedules. Seek alternative transport and shipping routes if necessary. Avoid all protests as a precaution. Heed all security and traffic advisories.
