Informational

Event

Officials have lifted all tsunami advisories issued for Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru as of Jan. 16. Tsunami advisories were issued on Jan. 15 following the volcanic eruption at Hunga-Tonga-Hunga-Ha'pai in Tonga. Authorities in the affected South American nations have lifted most advisories; only a few coastal regions experienced minor damage and some flooding.

The tsunami was approximately two meters (6.5 feet) high when it reach Peru, causing flooding and minor damage in coastal areas, including Pisco and Paracas; at least two fatalities were reported. Maritime traffic was also briefly suspended.

Authorities in Chile have lifted the 'State of Alarm' placed on several regions. Still, some remain under a 'State of Precaution' including Nuble-Biobio, Coquimbo, Atacama Norte, and Arica y Parinacota, while the Aysen and Magellan regions remain under a 'State of Information.' People are advised not to approach the coastline in these areas. Tsunami waves were reported in the cities of Iquique and Atacama and parts of the Los Rios region; coastal flooding and minor damage to piers have been reported.

The National Tsunami Warning Center of Ecuador issued tsunami warnings for Santa Cruz island in the Galapagos archipelago Jan. 15; however, no reports of damage, flooding, or casualties have been issued. While local authorities have not issued warnings for the mainland, they continue to closely monitor sea level disturbances along the continental coast.

Officials could modify or rescind advisories in the coming hours. Evacuations, business, and transport disruptions are likely as the situation evolves.
