Eswatini: Further anti-government protests possible through the end of January

Further anti-government protests possible in Eswatini through the end of January

Informational

Event

Further anti-government protests by university and school students are possible nationwide through January. Several unconfirmed reports indicate that several demonstrations have occurred in the country since Jan. 23. Anti-government protests were reported on Jan. 23 in Luyengo, where university students burned photos of King Mswati III. On Jan. 24, a protest march by students in Mbabane was reportedly blocked by police when the group attempted to deliver a petition to a local newspaper.

Police are likely to maintain a heightened security presence near protest locations. Short-term significant but highly localized disruptions are likely near all gatherings. Any street protests that form have the potential to be highly disruptive. Clashes are likely to occur if protests are reported. Widespread violence is unlikely, but cannot be discounted entirely.

Advice

Avoid protests and rallies that do occur due to possible violence. If clashes break out, leave the area immediately and take shelter in a secure, nongovernmental building. Follow all security personnel instructions. Monitor local news for updates on protests and road conditions, as party leaders may not announce actions in advance. Allow additional travel time near gatherings.
