Gambia: Heightened security likely in Bwiam following clashes between rebel forces and ECOMIG forces Jan. 24
Heightened security likely in Bwiam, Gambia, following clashes between rebel and ECOMIG forces Jan. 24. Further incidents possible.
Event
Two Senegalese soldiers from the ECOWAS Mission in The Gambia (ECOMIG) were reportedly killed during clashes with suspected members of the Movement of Democratic Forces of the Casamance (MFDC) rebel group, in Bwiam, Western Gambia Region, near Senegal's Casamance region, Jan. 24. One rebel was also killed and three others were captured. On Jan. 25, the Senegalese army announced that nine other soldiers were missing, likely detained by the rebels. As of Jan. 26, their whereabouts remain unknown. Security operations are reportedly ongoing to look for the victims and secure the area.
Security forces are almost certain to remain in affected areas in the coming weeks as a deterrent against armed criminal and political groups, such as the MFDC. Security personnel may impose localized movement restrictions, erect roadblocks or impose curfews in response to developments in Bwiam. Further security operations and incidents are possible.
Context
Casamance has previously been the site of a low-intensity separatist insurgency. The main separatist groups, including the MFDC, have fought for the independence of Casamance since 1982. The movement has been largely dormant since a 2014 ceasefire but has been blamed by the Senegalese government for occasional attacks and reportedly continues to finance itself through timber trafficking between Senegal and Gambia. ECOMIG, made up mainly of Senegalese soldiers, was deployed to Gambia in January 2017.
The security environment in Casamance remains poor. The actions of armed criminal groups, bandits, and factions of the MFDC constitute an ever-present threat to locals and travelers in the region.
