Heightened security will likely persist at least through mid-February in Bissau after government armed forces reportedly foiled a coup attempt against President Umaro Sissoco Embalo's government. According to official government sources, several people were killed and injured during gunfire exchanges near the Government Palace.
Military forces loyal to the Embalo government reportedly entered the Palace of Government at 17:20 and have deployed to several locations within the nation's capital, establishing a security perimeter around the palace and stationing troops near the Palace of Justice. A security warning by the Embassy of Portugal advising all Portuguese nationals in the country to remain in their homes and await further information due to the current security situation remains in effect as of 22:45 Feb. 1.
Forces in the capital will almost certainly maintain an elevated security posture until the situation stabilizes. Additional clashes between rival forces cannot be ruled out. Additional security measures may additional checkpoints and random searches of vehicles and pedestrians. Authorities may also impose an overnight curfew if the situation escalates.
