Further student protests are possible at the University of Makerere, Kampala, Uganda, through mid-February.

Informational

Event

Further student protests are possible at the University of Makerere in Kampala through mid-February following recent unrest. Students are protesting to demand in-person classes and that students arrested during recent demonstrations be released. On Feb. 7, police forces fired tear gas to disperse protesters and arrested ten students.

Security forces will most certainly deploy to any additional, related demonstrations. Gatherings are most likely at the university but could also impact outside of the complex. Protesters gathered in front of the Wandegeya Police Station Feb. 8 to demand the release of the arrested students. Localized traffic disruptions are likely near protest sites. Clashes between demonstrators and security forces are possible.

Advice

Avoid all demonstrations and anticipate localized disruptions nearby the university. If violence breaks out, leave the area immediately, and take shelter in a secure, nongovernmental building.
