Ukraine: Disruption to online banking services reported as of Feb. 15 following cyberattack

Event

Online banking operations have been disrupted for users of Privatbank and Oschadbank following an apparent distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack against the two Ukrainian banks on the evening of Feb. 15. The cyberattack also targeted the website of Ukraine's Ministry of Defense. No group has taken responsibility for the attack.

Additional cyberattacks against government institutions, telecommunication providers, banks, and other critical services are possible in the short term as tensions between Ukraine and Russia remain high.

Context

The websites of several government websites, including the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, were targeted in a cyberattack Jan. 15. Ukrainian authorities attributed this attack to individuals in Russia.
