Rival groups of protesters have gathered outside the Supreme Court building in Tegucigalpa on the afternoon of Feb. 16 in response to the arrest of former President Juan Orlando Hernandez. A large contingent of police has deployed to the area following isolated clashes between supporters and opponents of Hernandez. Transport and business disruptions are likely in the area throughout Feb. 16.

Context

Hernandez was arrested Feb. 15, less than three weeks after the end of his presidential term, when Honduran authorities received a formal extradition request from the US. In legal filings, the US Department of Justice has accused Hernandez of crimes related to drug trafficking; the former president has denied the claims.
