Sudan: Anti-coup activists stage demonstrations in cities across country Feb. 20

Anti-coup activists stage demonstrations in cities across Sudan Feb. 20; security forces kill one person amid protest in Khartoum North.

Warning

Event

Anti-coup activists staged demonstrations in cities across Sudan Feb. 20, including in Khartoum, Omdurman, El-Gadarif, and El-Obeid. In Khartoum, thousands of activists gathered to demand a return to civilian rule, with some marching toward the presidential palace. Security forces fired tear gas at protesters in Khartoum, Omdurman, and Khartoum North, as well as water cannon and stun grenades at demonstrators in the capital. Notably, a stray bullet fired by security forces killed one person in Khartoum North.

Lingering heightened security measures are likely in Khartoum and other protest-affected cities over the coming hours. Disruptions to transport, business, and telecommunications cannot be ruled out. Further anti-coup protests are almost certain to be held across Sudan over the coming days and weeks.

Context

Thousands of people have participated in large demonstrations in several Sudanese cities since the Oct. 25 coup d'etat, demanding that the country's military leadership transfer political power to civilian authorities. Clashes regularly break out between protesters and security personnel during such gatherings, with security forces often using tear gas, stun grenades, and live ammunition to forcibly disperse activists. Dozens of civilians have been killed and thousands of others wounded in the protests since the military's takeover.

Advice

Avoid all protests and related clashes. Take refuge in a secure, nongovernmental building if violence erupts in your area. Monitor local media for details concerning protest activity, as organizers may not announce plans in advance. Follow instructions issued by local authorities. Maintain contact with your diplomatic representation.
